According to a recent United States Census Bureau report called the Income, Earnings, and Poverty Data From the 2006 American Community Survey, the richest state in the nation is Maryland, overtaking last year's wealthiest New Jersey. Income growth was highest in the District of Columbia, where it rose 6.4 percent for the year, while the biggest decrease in income was Delaware, down 2.9 percent.
